One of the four sites of the mass Hindu pilgrimage, Allahabad holds an important position in Hindu sculptures, for it is situated at Triveni Sangam. Allahabad holds the reputation of staying a step ahead of all other cities, whether it is Indian history or modern politics. As per Hindu mythology, it is believed that the god of creation, Brahma, landed on earth in Allahabad. The city was originally named as Prayag or the place of offerings, and is revered as one of the most important pilgrim spots for the Hindus.

Allahabad finds its reference in the ancient scriptures like Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Vedas. A beautiful mélange of the holy rivers Ganga, the Yamuna and the legendary Saraswati, Allahabad is the second oldest city in India. It is rightly called the heart of Hinduism as it houses more than its fair share of temples.

The rich history of Allahabad attracts more and more tourists to it. Located on the bank of River Yamuna, the grand Allahabad Fort was constructed by Akbar.  The awe-inspiring architecture of the fort has become a famous landmark guarding the city.

Another must explore attraction of the city is the Ashoka Pillar inside the Allahabad Fort. The pillar features edicts from Ashoka apart from inscriptions from Samudragupta and Mughal Emperor Jehangir. 

Allahabad is also renowned for being home to famous colleges and research institutions. Known as the “Oxford of the East”, the city has given birth to some notable personalities such as Harivansh Rai Bachchan, Amitabh Bachchan and Subhadra Kumari.

Allahabad is flooded with travelers in the month of January, as the city is famous for Kumbh Mela celebrated here during this time. Over 60 million people participate in this grand fair where devotees gather to take a solemn dip in the holy rivers.

By Air: Bamrauli airport, 15 km away, is the closest airport to the city.
By Rail: Allahabad acts as a major junction and is well linked to all the key Indian cities.
