Punakha Dzong is the the second oldest dzong in the country enjoying a hilly background. It was built between 1637– 38 and remains the administrative centre of Punakha District. Tiger’s Nest Monastery, standing at an altitude of 900 hundred meters, also looks beautiful.

Also, spend some moments of peace at the Great Buddha Dordenma which celebrates the 60th anniversary of fourth king Jigme Singye Wangchuck. The statue houses numerous small Buddha statues made of bronze and gilded in gold.

For adventure lovers, Dochula Pass is a great escape. This mountain pass is blanketed with snow Himalayas and runs from Thimpu to Punakha. With 360 degree panoramic views, the place remains popular among photographers as well. Festivals of Bhutan
Festivals of Bhutan showcase its deeply rooted cultures. Thimphu Tshechu Festival evokes images of vibrant mask dance performances. Many tales are narrated through this festival in a beautiful manner. Another festival is Jambay Lhakhang Drup Festival marked by naked dancing, fire dance performances and mask dances. Jambay Lhakhang Monastery hosts this festival. Locals also give importance to the Jomolhari Mountain Festival which treats you with some beautiful trekking routes of Bhutan. If you are visiting Bhutan during summer months, then Haa Summer Festival can be witnessed. This festival is dedicated to tribal music and hiking tours. Other popular festivals of Bhutan include Punakha Drubchen and Tsechu, Jambay Lhakhang Drup, Monggar Tshechu, Nomad Festival, Pema Gatshel Tshechu, etc.

Food of Bhutan
Bhutanese cuisine is full of spices. Rice is the staple food of the nation. It is usually served with vegetables, Pork, beef and chicken dishes. Ema Datshi is often called as the national dish of Bhutan. Do try Tibetan-style dumplings (momo) served with spicy chutney. Red Rice is also cooked in every household of Bhutan.

Shopping in Bhutan
People of Bhutan are skilled and create products like Wooden Bowls and Cups, Cane and Bamboo Products, Bags, Blankets, Wooden Masks, etc. Bhutanese textiles are very rich and travellers can buy fabrics like cotton, raw cotton and silk from here. Adang village in Wangdue Phodrang is popular for selling textiles.

Local markets also have shops selling jewellery made with precious stones, silver, bronze and gold. Cane & Bamboo Items also make great souvenirs.

Months from October to December are great to visit Bhutan as the weather remains pleasant with cool winds.

How to Reach Bhutan
Paro International Airport is the only airport in Bhutan having connectivity with rest of the country. Road permits are required to visit here by road. Bus services are easily available from Kolkata, Siliguri and Phuentsholing.
