Statue of Unity

The Statue of Unity in Gujarat shines bright as one of the priceless gems of India Tourism. Dedicated to the ‘Iron Man of India’, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the statue is India’s first step into the club of the tallest statues in the world. The Statue of Unity is in fact the world’s tallest statue (about 600 feet). Standing tall atop Sadhu Bet Island on the Narmada, this statue is one of the most prized possessions of Gujarat.

Who was Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel?
Known as the ‘Ironman’ of India, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was one of India’s founding fathers and served as the first home minister of independent India. He was one leader who dedicatedly worked towards unifying the princely states of India. His constant relief efforts towards the refugees and will to integrate the British colonial provinces, earned him the title of “Unifier of India”. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel united all the 562 princely states of pre-independent India to build the Republic of India. His efforts and contribution towards uniting a country filled with diversities led to the creation of the Statue of Unity.

Statue of Unity Overview
The Stature of Unity took 33 months to get complete. The foundation of the statue was laid in the year 2013, and inaugurated on 31st October 2018. The inaugural date also marks the 143rd birth anniversary of Sardar Patel. The giant bronze statue was produced at a foundry in China. It was designed by Indian sculptor, Ram Vanji Suthar. Ram Vanji is a Padma Shree and Padma Bhushan awardee for his contribution in the field of arts.
Segregated into five zones, only three zones are open to public. The first level entails the base going all the way to the statue’s shins. It comprises of a museum exhibiting Sardar Patel’s contributions, and a memorial garden. Zone 2 goes up to the statue’s thighs at 149 metres. Zone 4 and 5 are the highest levels, and serve as the maintenance area.

How to reach
Nearest Airport - The Vadodara airport is about 90 kilometres away from the site. From the airport, you can hire a cab or use the state transport to get to the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel statue.
Nearest Railway Station - Vadodara railway station is the nearest rail head to the Sardar Patel statue. You can get on the public transport or book a cab to take you directly to the site.
