Umiam Lake: Nestling with flourishing forests and East Khasi hills, Umiam Lake remains the most beautiful place in Shillong. This is an extensive man-made water body formed by damming Umiam River. People visit here to enjoy day picnics amidst nature apart from enjoying boating and kayaking.

Shillong Peak
For a dazzling view of the fencing hills and valleys, do visit the majestic Shillong Peak, the highest view point in the city. The peak rises to a height of 6449 feet and offers 360-degree bird’s-eye view of the far-away hills, waterfalls and the plains of Bangladesh. This is a great place for photographers to click some amazing facades of nature.

Elephant Falls
Elephant Falls is a three-tier waterfall which attracts thousands of travelers due to its unmatched beauty. The waterfall received its name due to a huge adjoining rock which looks like an elephant. Today the rock cannot be seen as it got destroyed due to an earthquake but the beauty of this fall still remains intact.

Laitlum Canyons
Located in the Khasi Hills, Laitlum Canyons is a popular place among trekking enthusiasts, nature lovers, and calmness seekers. This hilltop viewpoint is perfect to enjoy views of gorges, distant hills, valleys, and hilly roads.

Best Time to Visit
Shillong enjoys a pleasant climate throughout the year. Months from March to June see the advent of summers here when streams of travelers visit here to escape the heat. Shillong receives heavy rainfall from June to September when sightseeing can be little difficult. Also, the months from October to February are also great to indulge in outdoor activities, but the weather during these months can be chilly with minimum temperature going as low as 2°C.

By Air: The nearest airport to the hill station is the Umroi Airport near Barapani.
By Rail: The closest railway station from Shillong is in Guwahati.
By Road: Travelers can also take a bus from Guwahati to Shillong as government operated deluxe and regular tourist buses are available here.
