History
It was originally named as Dharma Chakra Centre. It sits atop a hill 23 km from Gangtok and belongs to the Kargyu sect of Buddhists. These Buddhists originated in Tibet in the 12th century. Rumtek Monastery enjoys beautiful surroundings booming with verdant green mountains. Visiting here is both a spiritual as well as visual treat. Climb to reach here and you will be captivated by the beautiful views of the whole Gangtok from the top.
Architecture
The Rumtek Monastery is home to a stunning shrine temple as well as a monastery where monks can be seen meditating and indulging in Buddhist teachings. The main structure of the edifice is made as per the traditional designs of Tibetan monasteries. People from all over the world visit here to enjoy the spirituality of the place and learn about some key aspects of Buddhism. Here a beautiful golden stupa has been preserved which dates back to the 16th Karmapa. Here you can also explore numerous unique items of historical importance, including murals, frescos, Tibetan architecture, sculptures, and paintings.
