Fatehpur Sikri Travel

The World Heritage Site of Fatehpur Sikri was constructed by Emperor Akbar as part of his plans to build a grand capital for his empire. Situated 39Km away from Agra in Uttar Pradesh, Fatehpur Sikri served as the Mughal Capital from 1571 to 1585. Built entirely with red Sikri sandstone, the city’s architecture is a blend of Islamic and Hindu styles. The sandstone throughout the city has exquisite ornamental carvings and interlaced decorative designs.

One of the major attractions of Fatehpur Sikri is the Buland Darwaza, also known as the ‘Gate of Magnificence’. With a height of 54 metres, it is one of the largest gateways in the world. This 15 storey grand entrance was built to celebrate Mughal Emperor Akbar’s victory over Gujarat. The Buland Darwana is the perfect blend of Persian and Mughal architectures, and serves as the main entry to the imperial complex, Fatehpur Sikri.

Another popular attraction here is the grand Jodha Bai Palace of Fatehpur Sikri. A testimony to India’s golden past, the palace was constructed for the noble Hindu queen. For the queen’s safety, the palace just had a single doorway that was protected by guards at all times. While visiting the palace, you will observe various Hindu motifs such as srivatsa mark, parrots, lotus flowers, elephants and swans adorning its interiors. Step into this palace, and you will get an insight into the royal lifestyle of Mughal queens.

Diwan-E-Khas, also known as the Hall of Private Audiences is another prominent attraction here. The Diwan-E-Khas is a grand chamber in Fatehpur Sikri, and is where Emperor Akbar has discussions with people about the faiths belonging to different religion. Featuring four chhatris, this square shaped structure is popular for its intricately carved colossal central pillar.

Another major attraction here is the Hiran Minar, which is also known as the Tower of Antelope. It was named so after the Mughal Emperor Jahangir converted the region surrounding the tower into a deer (hiran) sanctuary.
