Top Places to Visit

Pemayangtse Monastery
Located about 140 kilometers west from Gangtok, this monastery was set up by Lama Lhatsun Chempo in 1705. It is counted among the oldest living monasteries of the state where many practicing monks can be seen meditating. The place has unmatched serenity and is perfect to connect with nature.

Kanchendzonga National Park
This national park is a dream of every wildlife lover. It covers of 849.5 km2 of area and rests at a height of 1,829 meters. Here you can explore beautiful forest cover of oaks, fir, birch, maple and willow. Also, spot animals like musk deer, snow leopard, Clouded Leopard and Himalayan tahr.

Nathu La Pass
Nathu La Pass is perhaps the most beautiful pass in India at an elevation of 4,310 meters. Here you get an opportunity to spot some endangered wild animals, including snow leopard, Tibetan gazelle, Tibetan wolf, Tibetan snowcock, etc. The valley is adorned with impressive beauty and charms all nature devotees.

Tsango Lake
Tsango Lake looks like a dream due to its charismatic outlook. This glacial lake can be accessed by taking a permit only. Locals here consider this lake as sacred as in ancient times Buddhist Saints used to predict future by looking at the color of this lake. There is also a small temple of lord Siva along the lake. While during winters it remains frozen, spring months from May to August are great to explore colorful flowers blooming around.

Rumtek Monastery
Rumtek Monastery dates back to the 16th century. It was originally raised by the 9th Karmapa Wangchuk Dorje but the 16th Karmapa rebuilt it in 1959. The Monastery is blessed with breathtaking views of nature and remains the largest Monastery in Sikkim. Many monks can be seen here performing various rituals and meditating.  

Namchi is a place where you can cherish all the wonders of nature at once. The place brings out the indigenous cultures of the Sikkimese people. From here, spot splendid views of Mt. Kanchenjunga. Weather here remains cool with summer temperature rising to around 22 degrees and winter temperature dropping to even 4 degrees Celsius.

Ravangla is an ancient town with thick forests all around. Nature lovers visit here for trekking and exploring some unseen vistas of flora. Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary is a popular attraction here. Catch views of flamboyant Himalayan birds here.

Food of Sikkim brings a mix of Nepalese, Tibetan and native Sikkimese cuisines. That’s why the food habits also show diverse cultures breathing here. Locals here have a love for rice. Steamed Momo remains a popular snack item. Thukpa, a Tibetan noodle soup, is highly consumed during winter months. Phagshapa is loved by every pork lover. Sha Phaley (stuffed bread) is also consumed a lot by the locals. Also, Sinki , a traditional dish prepared with radish roots, is cooked in every household.

Shopping spree is Sikkim is all about buying traditional things. Locals here are creative and make beautiful Tibetan woollen carpets. Travelers must also buy Choktses, tiny wooden ornate tables.  Dragon jewellery also remains highly popular among travelers as they make great souvenirs. The Temi Tea Estate in Sikkim produces tea of diverse flavors which can be tasted and bought here. Some of the popular shopping markets in Sikkim are Old Market, Lall Market, M.G. Road and New Market.

How to Reach
Sikkim is not connected with rest of the world by air. The nearest airport is at Bagdogra in West Bengal. Travelers can also enjoy helicopter rides between Gangtok - Bagdogra – Gangtok. Sikkim also doesn’t have a rail network.
