West Bengal oozes cultures in every sense. It evokes images of soothing Baul music, women in white and red saris, majestic Bengal tiger, gigantic Khangchendzonga and a celebrated past. The state is blessed with some beautiful destinations like Darjeeling, Sundarbans, Kurseong and Kalimpong which not only adorn the natural face of West Bengal but also carry a bag full of cultures.

Top places to visit in West Bengal:

Kolkata is the heart and soul of West Bengal. This state capital brims with modern Indian cultural, poetic as well as artistic charms.  The city flaunts a rich history. Howrah Bridge, the sixth longest cantilever bridge on earth, is a landmark attraction of Kolkata. Another prominent ancient wonder is Jorasanko Thakurbari which was once the residence of the ancestral Tagore family. To explore local cultures closely, do take a walk on the Park Street of Kolkata dotted with uncountable restaurants and pubs. The Indian Museum also deserves a visit for displaying35 grand galleries exhibiting uncountable antiquities, artefacts, paintings and mummies.   

Darjeeling encircled by the lower Himalayas looks magical. Darjeeling Himalayan Railway undoubtedly remains a popular attraction here. This Toy Train’ is a UNESCO World Heritage Site taking you on a joyful ride amidst ample of nature. For wildlife lovers, Darjeeling has the Singalila National Park and Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park where you can witness the world of wild closely. Also, do catch some unseen views of nature and heart warming sunsets from the Tiger Hill.

Bankura is another wonder for nature lovers. Visit here and unwind amidst unseen facades of nature all around.  Jhilmili remains the most beautiful place here. This is a forested area where you escape the world of concrete completely. The Gokul Chand Temple here has also earned a great popularity due to its spiritual and historical importance. The temple is 64 feet high and its architecture looks grand.

A visit to Siliguri is must if you are in West Bengal. Blessed with more than its fair share of temples and tea gardens, Siliguri charms all kinds of travellers. Kali Mandir, dedicated to Goddess Kali, is a popular religious spot here. Surroundings of this temple are beautiful and keep visitors hooked for hours.  Also take a walk through the Chilapata Forest where you will find a beautiful looking forest bungalow. Also take out time to visit the 2000 year old fortress, Nalraja Garh.

Murshidabad is known for its historical importance. It was once the capital during the Mughal rule.  The majestic Hazaarduari Palace here was constructed in the 19th century. Today you can see a museum here displaying belonging from the Nawab rule. Murshidabad  also houses the largest Imambara in India, Nizamat Imambara constructed by Nawab Siraj-ud-Daulah. Other popular places of interest in Murshidabad are Khushbagh, Katra Mosque, etc.

The food of West Bengal tells a lot about the state’s cultures. Luchi alur dom made of potatoes is loved by every local here. Keemar Doi Bora is also a popular dish made with minced meat and sweet and spicy curd. The taste of Kathi Rolls stuffed with meat kebabs never leaves your tongue. Jhal Muri is a popular street food in West Bengal sold by every local food vendor. If you are a non-vegetarian, you must try Kosha Mangsho made with mutton. The locals here include fish in all their meals. Ilish Maach is a popular dish item. Also, do savour the sweets of West Bengal like Rasgullas, Chamcham and Sondesh.

West Bengal is good for buying art and craft items. The state’s local markets brim with Bengali silk saris and Batik work Saris which grace every occasion. Travellers can also bag fabrics with Kantha, Chikan, Kashida and Zari work. Kolkata is a popular city for buying authentic fabrics from markets like Bara Bazaar, Esplanade and Gariahat..

Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata is the international airport of West Bengal. The state has great train connectivity too with Howrah railway station and Sealdah railway station in Kolkata. Roads of West Bengal are also well maintained and thus, travellers can easily plan road travel.
